Be Prepared

With a new home and living in a new area away from family Brian and I put together emergency kits for Family Home Evening. I got the idea from my sister Liah and her family. While they were still students living in their apartment they had emergency kits and I knew that was something I wanted to do with my family even though my family is just Brian and I.

To help you get started on your own emergency kits and give you an idea about what to put in them here is a list of what we put in ours. Also make sure everyone in your family has their own backpack to store all of the things in.

  • Rain pancho
  • Facemask
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Floss
  • Bar of soap
  • Wash cloth
  • Socks
  • 1 pair of underware
  • 1 paire of jeans
  • 1 shirt
  • Jacket or sweatshirt
  • Extra pair of shoes
  • Individual blankets (My sisters family just had one big blanket but I had smaller ones that would fit in both bags. We also talked about grabbing one of our sleeping bags if we think of it in an emergency.)
  • Chaptstick
  • $50 cash
Then we split up some items and put them in different bags:

Erin's bag:
  • Nail file
  • Nail clippers
  • Hair tie
  • Shampoo (I had a extra bottle that was a reasonable size)
  • Sewing kit
  • Flashlight with a crank on the side so you can charge it by hand
Brian's bag:
  • Matches
  • Book of Mormon
  • First aid kit
  • Compass (make sure it works)
  • Also keep your gas tank at half full at all times just in case you need to leave at a moments notice
I'm so grateful to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with prophets who have warned us to be prepared in times of crisis and emergency. Now that we have our ready to go emergency kits I feel a little more prepared in case anything does happen.

  1. I've wanted to do this, but I never want to go buy all the things necessary! But when the apocalypse comes I'll need one, so I'd better get started...
